It's an interesting time; watching these students as they are shown around before being assigned areas to help in. Without fail; whenever a new group arrived in the babies room, there would be gasps from a handful of the girls. Instantly they would switch-off from what was being said to the group, and would start waving, ooh-ing and aahing or making strange clicking noises at the babies.
The reactions from the boys varied. Some smiled; some looked a little concerned and others tried to hide. Why hide? Because the leader of the group would assign individuals to help out in the babies room for a couple of hours.
One guy caught my attention on the second day. He was not small but was trying to hide down the back so as not to be given this particular assignment. He wasn't so fortunate.
I must admit I was impressed. He didn't try and get out of his assignment but immediately asked what he could do to help. We started chatting and it turns out he had never held a baby before. Not ever. So we sat him down, handed him a baby and shared a few of the 'essentials' required when holding one so young.
He softened immediately. I wish I had taken a photo. If was enjoyable to watch him relax as he caught the babies attention and started interacting with her. We even caught him laughing and 'coo-ing' and by the end of his 2 hours he was smiling and chatting with us as well. It was a fun morning.
