Chinese New Year

It's the most important traditional festival on the Chinese calendar ... Chinese New Year.

Also known in China as Spring Festival, it's a very important time for families.

The reasons for the festivities are to celebrate a year of hard work, relax and spend time with family, and to wish for a lucky and prosperous year ahead.

The main traditions include eating a reunion dinner (on New Year's eve), decorating buildings with lucky red items, giving red envelopes to children or senior citizens (usually including large amounts of cash!), new clothes and off course setting off fire crackers to send off the old year and welcome in the new year.

We didn't celebrate this year, but friends of ours did in various ways. There were those who make their own chinese dumplings, attended the Lantern Festival in Auckland, or had family-sized get togethers with friends.  And if you'd like to see how some of the Children celebrated, then click here

How did you celebrate Chinese New Year?  Feel free to leave a comment on what you did to celebrate.
