Fundraising in Mangere

We've had a fabulous time fundraising at markets over the past couple of weeks.  For Paul & I it's not just a matter of raising funds, it's also been about raising the profile of James OCI and letting the community know that we exist and what we are all about.  So each time we've gone out, our rather large banner has accompanied us.

Our banner has been a great investment and has been brilliant to take with us. It's fascinating to watch as people read the banner, look at us (or our table) and then process what they have just read.  Some people read then keep walking, others look a bit puzzled, but then there are those where you can actually see them comprehend what they read.  And that is when the conversations start.

This past weekend was no exception.  We were fortunate to be included in the Matariki Massive Garage Sale in Mangere.  It's a once a year event held by the Strive Community Trust.  The key objective of the event is to give families, community groups, sports teams etc the opportunity to raise funds by selling items that they no longer want.

Since it's our local community, we were keen to participate.  We already know that the people of South Auckland are incredibly generous, and were not disappointed with the warmth and generosity shown at this event.  Not only did we manage to raise funds (and partially empty our garage - yay!) we also met lots of lovely people.  And of course wonderful, interesting conversations took place as well!

There were plenty of questions, discussions, looking at pictures, and exchanging of details and business cards.  And of course ... tons of 'ooh's and 'aah's over Talley's picture!

So we'd especially like to thank Tarsha, Deborah and the fantastic team at Strive Community Trust for all their hard work, and for the opportunity it gave us to talk about what we do and about Talley.  The team at Strive CT did an outstanding job of organising this garage sale, and we love that their hearts are for the local community.  For Paul & I, it was a fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning.

And if you are fond of second-hand bargains, then keep your eyes open for the next Matariki Massive Garage Sale in 2014  we'll see you there.... !
